SYNOPSIS: Set amid the austere beauty of the North Carolina coast, The Notebook begins with the story of Noah Calhoun, a rural Southerner recently returned form the Second World War. Noah is restoring a plantation home to its former glory, and he is haunted by images of the beautiful girl he met fourteen years earlier, a girl he loved like no other. Unable to find her, yet unwilling to forget the summer they spent together, Noah is content to live with only memories...until she unexpectedly returns to his town to see him once again.
Like a puzzle within a puzzle, the story of Noah and Allie is just the beginning. As it unfolds, their tale miraculously becomes something different, with much higher stakes. The result is a deeply moving portrait of love itself, the tender moments and the fundamental changes that affect us all. It is a story of miracles and emotions that will stay with you forever.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Nicholas Sparks is one of the world’s most beloved storytellers. All of his books have been New York Times bestsellers, with over 105 million copies sold worldwide, in more than 50 languages, including over 75 million copies in the United States alone.
MY REVIEW: This is a milestone for me. I’ve finally read a Nicholas Sparks novel. I’ve always meant to, but since pretty much every book he writes turns into a film, I usually just catch it on the big screen. Well now, I’ve experienced first-hand, what a hopeless romantic Sparks truly is.
It’s really no wonder why The Notebook is as popular is it is. This is the “What if” story that every woman has asked herself…”What if I ended up with my first, childhood love?” Well Allie did just that. She tried to take the path that was expected of her, the path that would lead her to a well-educated man who would provide for her as a good husband should. But she just couldn’t forget her first, true love, Noah Calhoun. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t stop thinking about the “What if’s.” And she acted on those impulses; running back home to find him as she had left him fourteen years prior.
Allie and Noah’s love conquered all. Conquered the demands of society, of money, and of social class. But in the end it was as Noah said: Allie and he were as different as night and day. One couldn’t exist without the other, yet they could never exist together. No matter how strong their love was, they were forever torn in opposite directions. But still, they never gave up, because frankly, there was no replacement for the other. Allie loved Noah and Noah loved Allie. It was as simple as that.
