Synopsis: Peter Antilys, Lord Commander of the royal army and veteran of countless battles, has been tasked with protecting the fortified city of Greyheart from an enemy he's never faced before. Elves have been spotted leaving their forest territories for the first time in more than one hundred years, and all reports of their movement declare they are marching for war. Villages near the elven border are losing their inhabitants, scouts who venture out never return again, and anyone who has seen the elves and survived bear strange and grievous wounds.
Now Peter must prepare a city to stand against a foe they never thought they'd face, but will they outlast the onslaught?
My Review: As With most novellas, the pace of Greyheart is fast, demanding you keep up quickly. We have Peter Antilys who happens to be Lord Commander of his village, preparing to battle an army of elves who have made themselves unnoticed over the last 100 years. We have been given no sort of background information as to why these Elves are attacking and sadly, I read through the entire story never receiving an answer to this somewhat important question. The battle eventually pursues, enrages quickly into a bloody disaster and then boom, the end.
If you want a quick read about a gruesome battle, then this is your book, but for me, I would like to know more about the reasons behind the attack and even the outcome. I assume the good guys lost but it was kind of open ended. The elves last words were agreeing with Peter about the entire battle being “for nothing.” Ironically, that’s exactly how I felt once I reached the end of this book.
About the Author: Victor Espinosa was born and raised in the sunny town of Naples, Florida, and has a deep love for the beach because of it. He spends most of his days writing one story or another while doing his best to prolong his life another few years. He love stories in any medium that they come in, be they books, movies, comics, video games, TV series, plays, anime, manga, musicals, interpretive dance or old fashioned camp fire tales. He has written in a few genres so far, the most prevalent being fantasy and science fiction, but he likes funny stories and the occasional ‘oh-that-was-so-scary-I-almost-peed-myself’ horrors as well.
